Surftape® co-ordinate system and component taping
Pick and Place v ‘Pick and Drop’
Embossed and punched tape loading systems use a system called ‘pick and drop’ to place the component in the pocket. Once the component is in the pocket, its position is fixed only by the boundaries of the pocket. In order to successfully place the component in the pocket, most tape loaders have to use vision to locate the pocket and place the component directly in the center.
Surftape uses a Pick and Place system based on absolute co-ordinates from the sprocket hole, which is the primary reference point for the location of the component.

The table opposite gives the absolute target position for each Surftape type. The equipment may be programmed or the tape fixture set to place the component at the required absolute position. Once set, the machine should place the subsequent components at the exact same position after tape index - no vision is required or should be used.
The placement accuracy achieved using the system depends on the accuracy of the tape indexing system, the consistency of component placement and any errors due to setup. Tempo can advise on methods to ensure this placement accuracy is better than 25um
