The varied applications of Surftape®
Different possibilities of applications
For increased efficiency and accuracy in loading and picking, specialised loaders and feeders, designed specifically for Surftape, are available. This can produce the most cost effective handling system for components since high-precision can be combined with high-speed. Some specialised feeders also offer the possibility of flip-chip dispensing as well as COB - see Tape feeders and Surftape.
Since the adhesive base securely holds devices in the position they are placed, the cavities on the tape do not have to be sized differently for different components to stop them moving about. This means zero tooling and that one size of surftape can be used for a large range of component sizes. This results in a substantially reduced inventory of tapes - 4 types replace hundreds of different sizes of conventional pocket tape.
Surftape does not require a cover tape which allows components to be inspected AND tested AFTER TAPING. This allows the unique process flow where product is inspected and tested in tape. Contact Tempo for more information on ‘Test-in-Tape’.

Test and Inspect IN tape
Surftape is a unique form of punched carrier tape where the component is placed on a sticky backing within a compartment boundary. Unlike conventional punched or embossed tape, the compartment does not have to be sized to the component leading to a ‘one size fits all’ tape system where one tape type can accommodate a variety of component sizes.
